About The Coalition

About the Coalition

Founded in the wake of the Montreal Massacre in 1989, the Coalition for Gun Control was formed to support strategies to reduce gun death, injury and crime. For more than 30 years, the Coalition for Gun Control has been working to make Canada safer and is supported by more than 200 health, crime prevention, victims, public safety, women’s and community organizations from across Canada. We have made progress but much more needs to be done.

The Coalition supports legislation that includes:

  • Licences that are periodically renewed for ALL gun owners.

  • A cost-effective system to track the sales of guns.

  • A ban on civilian possession of military assault weapons.

  • A ban on civilian possession of handguns with some limited exceptions.

In addition, the Coalition promotes:

  • Strict safe storage requirements.

  • A ban on replica firearms.

  • Measures to reduce smuggling and illegal trafficking.

  • Effective implementation of the law.

  • Deterrence and prevention in the justice system.

  • Education to raise awareness of the real risks associated with firearms and preventative measures, countering the myth of arming for self-protection.

Currently, the Coalition is focused on:

  • Banning the importation, sale and possession of handguns nationally

  • Intervening in court challenges over the Government’s ban of thousands of semi-automatic weapon

  • The Coalition has helped strengthen and defend Canada’s gun laws in parliament and in the courts. It is globally recognized as a leader in violence prevention and in combating the illicit trafficking of firearms.

  • Continuing to press the Government to fulfill its commitments to strengthen our laws and implement Bill C-71 and the ban on assault weapons. To learn more about banning civilian ownership of handguns and how you can help, click here.

  • Protecting sensible gun control laws and measures from challenges and attacks by the gun lobby

  • Research and public education

  • Improving measures to combat smuggling and the illegal gun trade.
