Public Health
The Coalition has studied various strategies set up by the Montérégie Public Health Board that works in a Québec region with a high number of suicides by firearms. Significant efforts have been made to target medical and social workers in order to better equip them to take effective actions, to conduct research, and to implement various outreach activities that incorporate issues related to misuse of firearms. Women’s Safety
Women’s safety is one issue at the forefront of gun control. In a number of cases of domestic violence, a firearm is used in order to threaten, or even kill one of the parties involved. Shelters and their staff are among those who act as first responders, aiding women daily.
Gun amnesty programs
Various gun amnesty programs have been implemented in efforts to facilitate the safe return of firearms. These programs constitute a best practice in gun control in that they reduce the risk of weapons falling into the hands of dangerous individuals. In this way, they significantly reduce the chances of gun theft and injury or death by firearm.
