Constitutional challenge filed by the Government of Quebec
The Coalition for Gun Control in partnership with Juripop has filed a motion to intervene at the Supreme Court of Canada in the constitutional challenge filed by the Quebec government. With the help of front-line police officers and police unions, the Quebec Government has argued that the long gun registry data is useful, that the province contributed to collecting it and that it is in the interests of public safety to maintain it. This has so far prevented the federal government from shutting down access to the gun registry in the province. Unfortunately, on March 27, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld the Federal Government’s right to destroy the remaining 1.2 million records of guns registered in Quebec. Charter challenge filed by the Schlifer Commemorative Clinic
Because guns are a particular threat to women, the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic serving abused women, with the help of its lawyers from Cavalluzzo Shilton McIntyre & Cornish LLP is arguing that Bill C-19 that ended the long gun registry and destroyed its data violates women’s rights to life, liberty and security under section 7 and women’s equality rights under section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom.
